Privacy

What we collect, why we collect it, and what we will never do with it.

If you are just looking

You can browse the whole directory without an account. We set no advertising cookies, run no advertising trackers, and build no profile of you across other websites.

Two small things are stored by your own browser and never leave your device: which theme you chose, light or dark, and whether you accepted or declined the analytics cookie described below.

The one optional cookie

We use Google Analytics to learn which pages actually help people find a church, so that the time spent on this site goes into the parts that are working. It is the only tracking on the site, and it is optional.

Nothing from Google is loaded until you press Accept. If you decline, or if you simply have not answered yet, no Google script runs and no analytics cookie is set. The whole site works either way.

You can change your mind at any moment: "Cookie choices" at the foot of every page asks again, and declining stops it immediately.

Maps and place search

Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap, so your browser contacts their servers when you view a map, and their privacy policy applies to that request. Typing a town into the map search sends that text to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to turn it into a location.

Links to Google Maps for directions, and to Google Calendar for events, only contact Google if you choose to click them.

If you write to us

The contact form stores what you send - your name, your email address, the subject, the page you were on and your message - in this site's own database, and emails a copy to us so we can reply. We keep it while it is useful to answer you, and you can ask us to delete it.

The spam check on our forms

Every form here - claiming a church, adding one, suggesting a correction, writing to us - is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, which tells a person apart from a script. It looks at your IP address and at signals from your browser for that single purpose. Cloudflare states that it is not used for advertising and not used to build a profile of you.

This one is not optional, in the same way the sign-in cookies are not optional: without it the forms fill with automated rubbish and stop working for everybody. It loads only on pages that carry a form.

If you have an account

We hold your name, your email address, the church you administer, and what you publish. We use them to run your account and to contact you about it. Signing in sets the cookies WordPress needs to keep you signed in; those are not optional, because without them there is no account.

We do not sell any of it, and we do not pass it to anyone except the services listed below that are needed to make the site work.

If you donate

Donations are handled by Stripe. Your card details are entered directly into Stripe's own fields and never reach our server. We see your name, your email address and the amount, which is what we need to thank you and to keep honest accounts.

Services we rely on

Our host, which runs the server and sends our email; Stripe, which processes donations; OpenStreetMap, which serves the maps; Cloudflare, whose Turnstile check guards the forms; and Google Analytics, but only if you accepted it. Each handles the minimum needed to do its job.

Like any web server, ours keeps access logs that include IP addresses. They are used to keep the site up and to investigate abuse, and nothing else.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to [email protected] and we will act on it.

Deleting your account does not delete the church listing, which is a directory record, but it can be unclaimed or removed on request.
